Microlearning

The graphic features a woman at the center holding a laptop, representing me, Lani, a proud community member of Rumie. The surrounding text tells my story: "September 2022: Discovered Rumie. A recent Master of Instructional Design grad, Lani was looking for an opportunity to apply her instructional design knowledge and skills in a meaningful way." An arrow points to the next section: "October 2022: Started as a Learning Designer. Lani authored 8 engaging Bytes in her first 8 months with Rumie (with more to come!), providing helpful feedback to her fellow Learning Designers along the way." Another arrow points to the following section: "Applying LD skills to a new career: Volunteering at Rumie has helped Lani improve her learning design skills, expand her portfolio, and grow her professional network! The knowledge and experience she gained as an LD contributed to her current role as an Instructional Designer, where she gets to practice her learning design skills daily to create impactful learning experiences." Below the sections, there is a quote from me: "Creating Bytes has refined my skills in presenting complex information in a simple, effective, and engaging way that resonates with learners!"

4 differentiated instruction strategies that appeal to a variety of student needs

Context: As an instructional designer, I understand the importance of catering to the diverse learning needs of learners.

Challenges: One-size-fits-all approaches to education do not benefit all learners, and it's essential for instructors to be able to differentiate their instruction to reach all students.

Solution: I created a microlearning course that provides a comprehensive and effective solution for instructors. The course is designed to be engaging, providing concrete strategies for instructors to differentiate their instruction and reach diverse learners on a continuum.

Using the Rumie Build tool, I developed this course that not only addresses the challenge, but also includes a scenario learning check at the end, to ensure that the strategies are well understood and can be implemented in real-life settings. This course is a valuable tool that can help instructors create an inclusive and effective learning environment for all students.

What are the 3 stages of psychosis?

Context: In this microlearning course, learners gain valuable insights into the progressive stages of psychosis and develop a deeper understanding of this mental health condition. Through real-life scenarios and interactive quizzes, learners will learn to recognize the signs, reduce stigma, and promote open conversations around mental health.

Challenges: Psychosis affects a significant number of individuals each year, and identifying the stages of psychosis can be challenging. Many symptoms may be vague or go unnoticed, leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment. This course aims to address these challenges by providing clear explanations and examples to help learners recognize the stages of psychosis accurately.

Solution: Through engaging content and interactive exercises, this microlearning course equips learners with the knowledge needed to understand the three stages of psychosis: the prodromal stage, the acute stage, and the recovery stage. By the end of the course, learners will be able to identify the symptoms associated with each stage and gain an appreciation for the importance of early intervention and appropriate treatment. This course empowers learners to make a positive impact by fostering empathy, reducing stigma, and promoting better mental health conversations.

Assessing Prior Knowledge

Context: Assessing prior knowledge plays a crucial role in instructional planning. By identifying and addressing misconceptions and planning lessons that build on the learners' existing knowledge and skills, instruction becomes more targeted and effective.

Challenges: If prior knowledge is not assessed and instruction is planned without the learner in mind, time is wasted for both the instructor and the learner. Instructors want to know how to assess the prior knowledge of their learners in order to plan meaningful, targeted instruction.

Solution: Using the 7Taps tool, I developed a microlearning course that not only addresses the challenge, but also includes multiple learning checks in each chapter to ensure understanding and retention of the material. This course is a valuable tool for instructors looking to plan meaningful and targeted instruction that takes into account the unique needs of their learners.

Essential Questions

Context: Instruction is not always engaging, especially when it does not promote critical thinking. One way to make instruction engaging and meaningful is to frame a unit of study with an essential question. Essential questions are open-ended, thought-provoking questions that are not easy to answer and drive meaningful learning.

Challenges: Instructors do not know the difference between a question and an essential question. They want to know what makes a question essential.

Solution: I designed this fun microlearning course to teach learners what exactly makes a question essential, and why essential questions are important in guiding a project or study. Learners will practice identifying examples and non-examples of essential questions to guide them in developing their own.
